From working to develop one of the first nonhuman primate models for the 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) to designing new therapeutic strategies and nanotechnology-based tests for rapidly diagnosing infections, researchers at Tulane University are responding across disciplines to the emerging coronavirus epidemic.
Ochsner Hospital for Children is the only program in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama to offer a noninvasive solution for extremely low birth weight (under 1000 grams or two pounds, three ounces) babies with a structural heart condition known as patency of the ductus arteriosus (PDA).
Dr. Frank Culicchia was named the second recipient of the Frank C. Di Vincenti, MD Community Leadership Award. West Jefferson Hospital Foundation will host a special cocktail reception on Oct. 9, 2020 at the English Turn Golf & Country Club in New Orleans to honor Cullichia with the award. The reception—Cheers to 60 Extraordinary Years – A Night in Black and White—will also be a celebration of West Jefferson Medical Center’s 60th anniversary. Funds raised from the event will benefit the Neurosciences Department.
Children’s Hospital New Orleans has reopened its Calhoun Street access point for ambulance and Emergency Department (ED) traffic as phase 1 of its ED expansion effort is complete. Phase 1 of the new ED includes the opening of 10 new patient exam rooms and two resuscitation rooms.
In addition, there will now be parking available on the Calhoun Street side of the hospital designated for ED patients and families.
The Louisiana Department of Health is being recognized for staff efforts to make more at-risk patients aware of the HIV prevention drug known as PrEP.
African-American women have ranked the second-highest for new HIV diagnoses in Louisiana, after gay black men. As the USA Today Network noted in a Feb. 7 story, LDH prevention manager Jacky Bickham helped launch an ambassador program in March of 2019 so that black women could be empowered to begin meaningful conversations with their partners and health providers about their sexual health.
