Tulane Medical Center has again earned comprehensive stroke certification from The Joint Commission, reflecting the hospital’s highest level of competence for treatment of serious stroke events.

Developed in collaboration with the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association, the certification recognizes the hospital’s ability to treat the most complex stroke patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Louisiana Department of Health confirmed the first death linked to a vaping-associated lung injury, or EVALI, in the state. Privacy laws prevent the release of further information about this individual.

The outbreak in Louisiana now includes 30 total cases. Among the Louisianans with these lung illnesses/injuries, the primary exposure factor is a combination of nicotine and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the main active ingredient in marijuana.

A free, online educational course offered by Louisiana Healthcare Connections throughout 2019 provided 121 clinicians across the state with the opportunity to become buprenorphine-waivered to treat Opioid-Use Disorder (OUD).

Conducted by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), the course provided clinical education and CMEs to clinicians in the use of buprenorphine to treat OUD. Buprenorphine is the first at-home therapy to treat OUD and offers great potential for expanding treatment, according to the New England Journal of Medicine.

American College of Physicians has released its annual list of the Top 10 Hospitalists in the nation, and St. Tammany Parish Hospital’s own Dr. Daniel Ilie, FACP, is among those honored.

Ilie earned a medical degree from University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Timisoara, Romania, and completed a residency at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago. He is board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and has been a member of the Department of Hospital Medicine at STPH since 2008.
