The grand opening of the new St. Tammany Health System Surgery Center was held on Dec. 17. The $75 million, same-day surgical facility is located adjacent to the health system’s Paul D. Cordes Outpatient Pavilion on Louisiana 1085 (Bootlegger Road) in Covington.

The 126,000-square-foot facility was designed with local surgeons’ input to meet the current and future demand for same-day surgeries, which is in turn fueled by technological advances that have expanded the number of procedures available in the 23-hour arena.

A second case of avian influenza, also known as the bird flu, has been detected in a backyard flock in southwest Louisiana, the state Department of Agriculture and Forestry reported Thursday.

Earlier this week, the state’s first backyard avian flu case was reported in northwest Louisiana. State officials have not identified the type of birds involved in either case but said it involves a non-commercial, “non-poultry” flock, just like the instance reported Monday.

University Medical Center New Orleans (UMC) announced that current interim Chief Medical Officer and Emergency Physician Jeffrey Elder, MD, has been officially named as permanent chief medical officer.

Louisiana is currently experiencing the largest number of early-season flu cases in the U.S. According to the CDC, the state’s positivity rate exceeds 11-percent, with the national average settling in at 3.5-percent.

Louisiana’s mild winters precipitate the spread of the virus. Low vaccination rates contribute to the higher numbers of infection.

Health officials are encouraging those who have not yet been vaccinated to get the vaccine so that they can be prepared for the winter months when case numbers will rise.

Registration is open for Ochsner Eat Fit and its annual Alcohol Free for 40 Challenge starting March 6, the Thursday after Ash Wednesday.

The challenge will come after a season of celebratory drinks and parties spanning from Christmas, New Year’s, and Mardi Gras. To encourage Louisianans to take a break from alcohol and make it their own self-experiment, the Alcohol Free for 40 Challenge has registrants monitor their progress and measure their results.
