DePaul Encourages Monitoring Eye Health

DePaul Community Health Centers (DCHC) encourages everyone to get an annual eye exam. Glaucoma affects millions of people, particularly older adults and African Americans, and is the leading cause of blindness and vision loss in the United States. Many are unaware that having their vision checked once a year can be key in early detection.

"Initially, when I was diagnosed, I felt as if I was given a death sentence. However, as time has passed, I’ve learned to adjust," said Carlette Taylor, a DCHC staff member who is an advocate of eye health after unexpectedly being diagnosed with Closed Angle Glaucoma in 2005.

Her experience with the rare form of glaucoma has led her to spreading information about preventative measures people can take in an effort to maintain and improve their eye health.

There is also the assumption that only people with diabetes are left struggling with glaucoma, due to high levels of glucose being a factor in having glaucoma. Carlette, who isn’t a diabetic, has stents in both of her eyes and has lost her peripheral vision completely in her right eye.

To learn more about glaucoma and to schedule an annual optometry exam at DCHC Carrollton, call (504) 207-3060 or use DCHC's "Find a Provider" by going to DePaul Community Health Centers.
