LSU Health New Orleans School of Nursing is accepting applications for its Nurse-Midwifery Doctor of Nursing Practice Program. The only nurse-midwifery program in the state, it has been pre-accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME) to begin admitting students in 2023.
Graduates of the Nurse-Midwifery DNP program are eligible to take the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB) national certification exam to practice as a certified nurse-midwife. Nurse-midwives provide care during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. They also care for newborns in the first 28 days of life, are primary care providers, and provide sexual and reproductive healthcare. Certified nurse-midwives work in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, birth centers, and health centers.
The DNP program consists of 86 semester credit hours. Full and part-time options are offered. The full-time course of study is completed in nine continuous semesters (three years). Students can enroll full-time in the summer semester, and part-time students can start any semester. Application deadlines are Fall (part-time): June 1; Spring (part-time): November 1; Summer (full or part-time): March 1.
Requirements include a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from an accredited nursing program, an unencumbered RN license with eligibility for licensure in Louisiana, an undergraduate 3.0 GPA or higher on a scale of 4.0, three references, one year of experience as an RN within the last three years – maternal/child health preferred. The Nurse-Midwifery DNP Program uses a holistic admissions process that recognizes individual strengths and attributes.
Students will learn in a variety of settings throughout the state, including rural and low-resource areas, to prepare them to meet the diverse needs of Louisiana’s families. LSU Health New Orleans’ School of Nursing has more than 140 clinical affiliations across Louisiana. The nurse-midwifery program will work with clinical partners to place nurse-midwifery DNP students in clinical experiences that meet program outcomes and individual student learning needs.
