Research for the Cure Gala Benefits Louisiana Cancer Research Center

The Shops at Canal Place will open their doors for a special evening on Oct. 16. for the Research for the Cure Gala in support of the Louisiana Cancer Research Center (LCRC) and hosted by Canal Place. From 6-9 p.m., attendees can shop and browse while enjoying restaurants, caterers, and local music.

The LCRC facilitates and supports cancer-focused research through collaborations between member institutions LSU Health New Orleans, Tulane University School of Medicine, Xavier University of Louisiana, and Ochsner Health System. Together they compete for millions in federal cancer research dollars earning $23.6 million in 2018 alone and $335 million since 2002.

This year’s gala chairs are Barbara Greenberg and Sue Singer. The honorary chairs are former TV and radio journalist Angela Hill, WWL TV anchor Karen Swensen, and Saks Fifth Avenue New Orleans General Manager Carolyn Elder.

Greenberg explained, “For many of us, cancer and its research are personal. We have lost parents, siblings, spouses, children, and dear friends. Cancer does not discriminate. In addition, some of us are predisposed due to inherited genetic mutations, thus fighting genetic wars. Only research can provide answers for prevention, knowledge, treatment guidance, and early diagnosis. Only research will lead to permanent cures.”

“We must continue to wage this war on cancer,” said Singer. “It is the #2 killer in Louisiana. And thanks to the LCRC, essential research and clinical studies are a daily reality. LCRC-related research not only benefits the Louisiana people by making clinical trials more accessible to cancer patients, but also by providing an important economic boost to our region.”
