This Father’s Day, Louisiana Healthcare Connections is encouraging fathers and men across Louisiana to make their health a priority by getting screened for colorectal cancer.
Colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), colorectal cancer screenings should begin at age 45 for most adults, even for those without symptoms or a family history. The CDC also notes that colorectal cancer incidence rates are significantly higher in men than in women.
As a statewide Medicaid health plan, Louisiana Healthcare Connections notes that Medicaid covers colorectal cancer screenings for eligible members, including colonoscopies and Cologuard®, an at-home screening kit delivered directly to members’ doors.
Louisiana Healthcare Connections reminds members that some individuals may need to begin screening earlier or be tested more frequently if they have:
· A personal or family history of colorectal cancer or colorectal polyps
· Inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis
· Certain hereditary conditions associated with colorectal cancer rising
