DCHC Hosts 'BroTalk: Overcoming Postpartum Depression'

The public is invited to join DePaul Community Health Centers (DCHC) and Total Community Action (TCA) on Jan. 20 for “BroTalk: Overcoming Postpartum Depression.”

The free event, which will take place from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at Total Community Action (1416 S. Norman C. Francis Parkway), will give fathers the tools needed to recognize and receive help for depression they, or their partner, may experience after the birth of their child(ren).

According to research conducted by the Boston College School of Nursing in Chestnut Hill, Mass., during the first year after a child is born, the incidence of paternal depression ranged from 1.2% to 25.5% in community samples, and from 24% to 50% among men whose partners were experiencing postpartum depression. Maternal depression was identified as the strongest predictor of paternal depression during the postpartum period.

“Often times, when people hear the term ‘postpartum depression’ they think of the mother having a hard time adjusting to lifestyle changes and coping with hormonal changes after giving birth,” said Stephenie Marshall, executive director of DePaul Community Health Centers and director of DePaul’s Infant Equity Education Program (DIEEP).

“Postpartum depression can affect fathers as well. It’s important for both parents to know the signs of postpartum depression and to have access to the proper resources so they are able to care for themselves, and their baby, to the best of their ability.”
