Health Care Heroes honors healthcare nurses, physicians, professionals, and volunteers in the New Orleans area for their industry achievements and community involvement.

West Jefferson Medical Center (WJMC) announces the appointment of James Callaghan, MD, as chief medical officer. Callaghan has been an integral part of WJMC since 1994. His extensive expertise in emergency medicine, a field in which he has been board-certified since 1995, has been pivotal in providing critical care at the medical center.

Louisiana Healthcare Connections, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Centene Corporation, has opened its 2024 Community Health Grants cycle, which will invest $200,000 in nonprofits, healthcare providers, and schools for a wide variety of health-related initiatives.

Priority will be given to applications that align with strategic priorities addressing social determinants of health, increasing access to preventive care, promoting health equity, and improving health outcomes in Louisiana.

Abdullah Munir, MD, interventional cardiologist at Cardiovascular Institute of the South (CIS), is the first in the Capital Region and second in Louisiana to use the AGENT™ Drug-Coated Balloon, the first FDA-approved drug-coated coronary balloon in the U.S. for the treatment of coronary in-stent restenosis. The procedure took place at Lane Regional Medical Center.
