The purpose of writing this article is so that all parties participating in a medication administration program are informed of what medication management should look like in an assisted living com- munity (ALC) and the full particulars. To begin, most regulations regarding ALCs vary from state to state. Therefore, if you are talking to a family member in another state about what goes on in their loved one’s community, just know that may very well be different from what your loved one experiences in an assisted liv- ing community in the state of Louisiana. In Louisiana, ALCs are licensed asAdult Resi- dential Care Communities (ARCP) and are required to have policies regarding medi- cation administration, whether a resident self-administers, receives assistance with self-administration, receives gratuitous or third-party administration, or totally depends on staff for their medication ad- ministration.
