48 JUL / AUG 2022 I  HEALTHCARE JOURNAL OF NEW ORLEANS MEDICAL SOCIETY COLUMN MEDICAL SOCIETY THE Medical Association of Southeast Louisiana (MASELA), togetherwith Jeffer- son and Orleans Parish Medical societies, is actively addressing the COVID-related isolation, which took a toll on physicians. Physician well-being is a top priority of MASELA, and our Board is committed to enhancing professional satisfaction amongst our members by hosting mem- ber events to encourage collegiality and networking with a dose of fun thrown in. MASELA’s goal is to bring physicians together out of our respective silos to im- prove personal and professional connec- tions, provide mentoring opportunities, and provide patient referral opportunities. Recently, ourorganizationheldtwoevents, which were well attended by physicians of various specialties and practice modes. We have many more planned through- out the remainder of 2022 and into 2023. In April, physicians gathered after work at a local watering hole, Second Line Brewing, to enjoy a beautiful day, ta- cos, and beer. Physicians connected in a relaxed setting without the pressures of practice or the hospital. I was pleased to hear so much lively discussion and laugh- ter — a sign that we are providing a unique member value as we come out of the pan- demic. Many stayed to cheer the Pelicans! In May, MASELA’s members and their families gathered at City Putt on a Sun- day afternoon. Recognizing that physi- cians put a high priority on family time, MASELA will provide more opportu- nities for physicians, especially those early in their careers, to gather in a nice setting for physical activity and a lit- tle healthy competition — in this case, a game of miniature golf in City Park. In July, MASELA is launching its Col- legiality Dinner Series for our members. Collegiality dinners are an opportuni- ty for physicians to gather for a social event that encourages reconnections with colleagues. The evening doesn’t include long speeches or presentations — only sharing and celebrating — the best pre- scription after a long day and a long two years of not being able to be together. MASELA expects to host three to five col- legiality dinners annually. MASELA cel- ebrates physicians for the contributions they make to our community every day. Also coming up later this fall, MASE- LA, JPMS, and OPMS will host time- ly broad topic educational gatherings in local hospitals. We expect to have a speaker on physician well-being at our membership meeting in October. We will conclude the year with cel- ebrating MASELA, JPMS, and OPMS leadership transition with a joint instal- lation of officers in December. Last year’s event was a lot of fun as we celebrat- ed our organizations, our new leaders, and the holiday season. This year, we’ll also honor those physicians who grad- uated medical school 50-52 years ago! We encourage physicians who want to get out of their silos and interact with medical colleagues of every special- ty and setting and have some fun, too, to join MASELA, JPMS, and OPMS. n MASELA was formed in 2020 as a union between Orleans (OPMS) and Jefferson (JPMS) medical so- cieties as a physician-centered organization for the benefit of our patients.
