Developed in collaboration with the American HeartAssociation and theAmerican StrokeAsso- ciation, the certification recognizes the hospital’s ability to treat the most complex stroke patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “We believe there is no better place in the region to treat strokes and their side effects than Tulane Medical Center,” said Dr. Aaron Dumont of the Tulane Neuroscience Center.“But this level of care doesn’t occur without significant, intentional work on the parts of several people. I appreciate the leadership of our vice president of neuroscience services Olivia Fleming, stroke program coordi- nator Krystal Gettys, and our unparalleled pro- vider team that includes nurse practitioners Olivia Cornu and Erica Lee Williams, Dr. Peter Amenta, Dr. Aimee Aysenne, Dr. John Freiberg, Dr. John Nerva, and Dr.Justin Salerian.” TulaneMedical Center was initially the first hos- pital in Orleans Parish to earn this certification. To earn recertification as a Comprehensive Stroke Center, the Tulane stroke program under- went a rigorous, unannounced onsite review, dur- ing which a team of Joint Commission reviewers evaluated the hospital’s compliance with related certification standards. Joint Commission stan- dards are developed in consultation with health- care experts and providers,measurement experts and patients.The reviewers also conducted onsite observations and interviews. As a comprehensive stroke center,TulaneMedi- cal Center brings together experts from theTulane University School of Medicine with multidisci- plinary-trained nurses and staff, a neuro-inten- sive care unit, advanced imaging, post-hospital care, and access to stroke research and clinical trials. “I am proud of the work our team has done to build this stroke program, and it is gratifying to see that work recognizedwith this recertification,” said Dr.Bob Lynch,Tulane Health System’s acting CEO. “But I am even more appreciative of what this means for our patients and community.” n tissue donor registrations across the state. The award was presented by the Workplace Part- nership for Life (WPFL) Hospital Organ Dona- tion Campaign, a national initiative that unites the U.S. Department of Health and Human Ser- vices, Health Resources and ServicesAdministra- tion (HRSA), and the organ donation community withworkplaces across the nation in spreading the word about the importance of donation. Tulane Medical Center participated in HRSA’s WPFL Hospital Organ Donation Campaign from October of 2018 to April of 2019. The program challenges hospitals and healthcare organiza- tions to “let life bloom” by educating their staff, patients,visitors,and communities about the criti- cal need for organ,eye,and tissue donation and by offering themopportunities to register as donors. TulaneMedical Center earned points for complet- ing awareness and registry activities and prompt- ing 10 new donor registrations during the cam- paign period. Tulane Medical Center was one of more than 1,490 organizations to participate in the 2019 campaign and one of 639 organizations to earn platinum recognition. “One organ donor has the power to save up to nine lives,restore sight to two people and enhance the lives of up to 50 more through tissue dona- tion,”said Ed Medina, vice president of the Tulane Transplant Institute. “While our transplant team cares for and surgically facilitates transplantation, it’s the organ donors that truly give the gift of life. We’re honored to participate in these exciting events through vol- unteer support and onsite healthcare services.” Daniel Ilie, MD, Among Top 10 Hospitalists in the Nation American College of Physicians has released its annual list of theTop 10Hospitalists in the nation, and St. Tammany Health System’s own Dr. Dan- iel Ilie, FACP, is among those honored. Ilie earned a medical degree from University of Medicine and Pharmacy,Timisoara,Romania,and completed a residency at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago. He is board-certified by theAmerican Board of Internal Medicine and has been amem- ber of the Department of Hospital Medicine at the hospital since 2008. As chairman of themedical services committee, Ilie guides the quality agenda for St. Tammany’s clinical service lines. In this capacity, he has led projects that have, among other achievements, reduced readmissions for high-risk patients from 13.2 percent in 2017 to 10.9 percent today.In addi- tion, Ilie is a champion of the hospital’s electronic record and physician order entry,which improves accuracy of prescriptions. Ilie was the physician champion for St.Tamma- ny’s launch of Accountable Care Units (ACUs), a style of inpatient hospital care that improves effi- ciency, accuracy, and overall patient and staff experience in acute care settings through adher- ence to structured interdisciplinary bedside rounds (SIBR). “It represents a change in culture regarding the way inpatient rounds are done,” Ilie explained of SIBR.“Different disciplines act as one, encourag- ing the patient’s involvement in their care at the time that rounds are made at the bedside.
