Discovery will lease the facility from Ochsner to operate a Type 1 charter school and will have exclusive control of the school’s oper- ational aspects. Jefferson Parish Schools will lease the land (1108 Shrewsbury Road) to Ochs- ner for the development of the school project. Jefferson Parish Schools will also lease Discov- ery temporary space (2012 Jefferson Highway) to operate on an interimbasis while construction in underway. The school will be named after the late Dr.John Ochsner - a world-renowned cardiologist and son of Dr. Alton Ochsner, founder of the health sys- tem – who believed in investing in education to give Louisiana and its children a promising future. Applications open in Fall of 2019 and admis- sion will be awarded based on a transparent lot- tery system, not admissions testing. Discovery will oversee the enrollment lottery. Half of the open seats will be designated for children resid- ing in Jefferson Parish. Honoring the heritage of the JohnMartyn campus, the school will be in the heart of the Shrewsbury community and offer an admissions lottery preference to kids from the surrounding neighborhood, including the Shrews- bury and Harlemsubdivisions.The remaining half will be designated for children of Ochsner employ- ees living in Jefferson Parish in accordance with state law and in consideration of Ochsner’s dona- tion of major capital improvements to the school. Young Teens Learning to be Safe Sitters at STPHParenting Center The Parenting Center of St. Tammany Parish Hospital has achieved Silver Status as a Regis- tered Safe Sitter® Teaching Site, offering life and safety training for young teens grades 6-8.The sil- ver distinction is issued to those centers teaching more than 100 students in a single year. Graduates learn how to prevent injuries and handle emergencies when home alone, watching younger siblings or babysitting. Injuries are the leading cause of death in chil- dren up to age five. According to the Louisiana STEM Initiative, over the next 12 years, Louisiana and the nation will see a surge in the number of job opportunities available in the fields of STEM. How- ever, only 10 percent of Louisiana students met the STEMbenchmark demonstrating their readi- ness for math and science coursework in college. “The best way to develop meaningful curricu- lum and classroom delivery models that provide relevant workforce skill sets to our children is for industry and education leaders to enter into these types of collaborative agreements.Thismodel lev- erages the partners’combined knowledge of mar- ket demands, skills, education and our student population,” added Clay Moise, Jefferson Parish School Board, District 3. “Discovery is a high performing school and Ochsner is a trusted community partner. The partnership will result in positive outcomes for children by providingmuch needed resources and strong collaborations,”said Cade Brumley,super- intendent, Jefferson Parish Schools. “A state-of- the-art campus will add value to the portfolio of Jefferson Parish Schools, especially when our average school is 54-years-old.” The school plans to open in August of 2020 (grades K-3) at an interim location at 2012 Jef- ferson Highway before transitioning into its per- manent,new campus located at 1108 Shrewsbury Road in August of 2021 (grades K-6). It will then grow into grades K-7 and K-8 in 2022 and 2023, respectively. Plan (TCHP), the nation’s first and largest Medic- aid healthmaintenance organization created just for children. Under his leadership, TCHP under- went a cultural and financial turnaround. Fragoso fully integrated TCHP into the Texas Children’s system to enable and strengthen physician part- nerships, drive better patient outcomes, and reduce the cost of care for TCHP members. This integration, along with building a network of com- munity partners, set the stage for the launch of the Texas Children’s Population Health initiative. Prior to TCHP, Fragoso served as the vice pres- ident of business operations at Texas Children’s Pediatrics. In this role, Fragoso partnered with Texas Children’s Community and Emergency Department staff and pediatricians to create and establish a network of pediatric urgent care clin- ics, which increased access to pediatric primary care, reduced the cost of care, and relieved the overcrowding of low-acuity Emergency Depart- ment visits. After completing a Bachelor of BusinessAdmin- istration in Accounting at Loyola University Chi- cago, Fragoso began his career in accounting at KPMG. He went on to hold senior finance and accounting roles at Resurrection Health Care (now Presence Health), Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, and Baylor Col- lege of Medicine. Discovery Health Sciences Academy, Ochsner Partner to Open NewK-8 School A new school will open in Jefferson Parish, thanks to an innovative partnership between the Ochsner Health System (Ochsner) and Discovery Health SciencesAcademy (Discovery).TheJeffer- son Parish School Board unanimously approved plans for the Dr. John Ochsner Discovery Health Sciences Academy at the John Martyn cam- pus. Once fully enrolled, this charter school will educate approximately 700 students in grades kindergarten through 8th grade. “We are partnering with Ochsner so that together we can offer even more students the opportunity to attend a high-quality, open-en- rollment school,” said Dr. Patty Glaser, head of school, Discovery Health Sciences Academy. “With over 1,000 families on our wait list, we are
