Healthcare Journal of NEW ORLEANS  I  MAY / JUN 2019 49 George S. Bisset, III, MD Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer Children’s Hospital New Orleans Our collaboration with Tulane Univer- sity School of Medicine will also allow Children’s to expand clinical research. Tulane is the largest pediatric research or- ganization in the state, with more than $5 million annually in federally funded pedi- atric research. The partnership brings new opportunities to improve the health of our children right here at home. Simulation Center Offers Hands-On Training in Real Life Scenarios Children’s Hospital is also in the process of building a new state-of-the-art Pediatric Simulation Center—the first of its kind in Louisiana. The center will provide hands- on learning to residents, medical students, health professionals, and families through the use of advanced pediatric robots that simulate real-life patient scenarios. The center will provide a realistic and safe learning environment in which pedi- atric healthcare providers will gain the ex- pertise needed to provide safe, high quality patient care. The center also offers families a place to learn how to care for children with complex medical needs, such as a new tracheostomy or home ventilator. This is a game changer in giving parents and caregivers of sick children the confidence and skills they need to care for their chil- dren once they leave the hospital. The pediatric simulation center will in- clude four total simulation rooms, includ- ing two patient rooms, one OR room, and one ICU room, all facilitated by a separate control area where educators can repli- cate real life scenarios for learners. The enhancements also include new wireless Gaumard manikins, which are ideal for educational training in mock codes, flight care scenarios, and other complex medical cases. The simulator manikins vary by age and size, providing experience ranging from newborns through adolescents. This inno- vative training provides our students and providers with an interprofessional train- ing environment that improves patient safety and outcomes. Together, we are shaping the future of healthcare for the state of Louisiana and its children, and we are driven by our unwav- ering commitment to improve the health of our kids and communities. n Dr. George Bisset was appointed chief med- ical officer of Children’s Hospital in April of 2018.
