Ochsner Academics Announces 2021 Residency Match Day Results

The University of Queensland Ochsner Clinical School (UQ OCS), Ochsner Graduate Medical Education, and Ochsner System Pharmacy Education recently celebrated Match Day 2021  – a rite of passage in which applicants from around the globe learn who has been selected or matched to a U.S. residency program for the next chapter of their medical or pharmacy training.

“Match Day is a milestone all medical students look forward to as they work toward their careers. Our UQ OCS program provides students with a unique global perspective during their training to become physicians – this is especially important in today’s environment, as physicians and healthcare providers worldwide have spent the past year caring for patients impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Leonardo Seoane, MD, chief academic officer, Ochsner Health. “We are also thrilled that 100% of positions were filled for our Ochsner Graduate Medical Education Program, and excited to welcome residents and fellows from UQ OCS as well as students from nationally-renowned medical schools in Louisiana and across the country.”

The UQ OCS Class of 2020 received a 97% Match Rate through the National Residency Match Program – a rate comparable with the national Match Rate for U.S. medical schools. This is the highest match rate in the history of UQ OCS and marks the ninth consecutive year that the school’s match rate has been 90% or above.

This year, 88 medical students from the UQ OCS Class of 2020 participated in the National Residency Match Program. Students matched into residency training programs at many prestigious institutions across the country, including Ochsner Health, Duke University, Brown University, Yale University and Stanford University to name a few. Students also matched at the in-state programs at Tulane University, LSU New Orleans, and Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport. Matched students start their residency programs in July 2021.

Of the UQ OCS students matched this year:

27% are remaining in Louisiana for their residency

13% of graduates remaining in Louisiana are staying with Ochsner Health for their medical training and have accepted positions within one of the 31 ACGME-accredited residency programs offered by Graduate Medical Education at Ochsner

73% matched outside of Louisiana for medical training

The UQ Ochsner Clinical School is a unique four-year training, academic and clinical experience, which takes place across two continents. The first two years of medical school curriculum occur at The University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, which is recognized as one of the top medical schools in the world and ranked 42nd worldwide on the 2019 US News Best Global Universities list. The final two years of clinical study are completed with the Ochsner Health in New Orleans.
