The members of the fifth University of Queensland (UQ) – Ochsner Clinical School graduating class celebrated 2017 Match Day with an impressive 95% Match Rate through the National Residency Match Program (NRMP), which is above the national match rate for U.S. medical schools. This year’s cohort is the largest in program history.
Students entered Match Day and received residency matches to many of the most prestigious institutions across the country, such as Ochsner Health System, University of Pennsylvania, John’s Hopkins Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Emory University, Dartmouth, Barnes – Jewish Hospital and Mayo Clinic.
In addition, 33% of matched residents are remaining in Louisiana for medical training, with 20% staying in the Ochsner Health system.
“The Graduate Medical Education Office at Ochsner is pleased to have filled 55 of 57 positions offered in this year’s match,” said Ronald Amedee, MD, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Designated Institutional Official, Ochsner Health System. Amedee adds “20% percent of the matched positions were filled by students from our own University of Queensland – Ochsner Clinical School graduating class of 2016. We are excited to have our former medical students join us as they progress through the medical education continuum at Ochsner.”
Residents matched in specialties including Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Anesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Family and Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Neurology, OB/GYN, Pathology, Pediatrics, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Psychiatry and Radiology.
“Our program offers a novel, global medical school experience and our continued success on Match Day reinforces the unique education these future doctors are receiving,” said William McDade, MD, Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer, Ochsner Health System. “For the fifth year in a row, our Match Rate has been 90% or higher. That is a credit to the quality of our students, our faculty and the program itself. We have a lot to be proud of.”
The class of 2016 UQ – Ochsner Clinical School students graduated in December 2016 and will begin their residencies in July 2017. This fifth graduating class completed two years of study at The University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia which is consistently ranked as one of the top universities in the world, followed by two years of clinical study at Ochsner which is recognized as one of the top academic medical centers in the United States. This innovative medical education program educates U.S. citizens on two continents and was established in 2009.
