About 200 alumni of LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry will gather at the school at 1100 Florida Avenue on Aug. 24 to commemorate the past and learn about the future of the school and the profession. As New Orleans celebrates its tricentennial, LSU Health New Orleans celebrates the 50th anniversary of its School of Dentistry, the only dental school in Louisiana, at Alumni Day 2018 from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. The day includes continuing education courses and workshops on topics including technology in the dental practice, the impact of aging on oral health, dental practice model trends, and advances in the field. Alumni will tour the school to see the many improvements including renovated classrooms and common areas, the Interprofessional Education Health Clinic, and the new Advanced Clinical Care and Research Building, which opened in the spring. A festive 50th reunion, where classmates can catch up and meet current faculty and students, will top off the day. About 100 senior students in dentistry, dental hygiene, and dental laboratory technology are also expected to participate.
From a national perspective, LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry is unique among the more than 65 dental schools in the United States because it offers degrees in dentistry, dental hygiene, and dental laboratory technology. By training students in all aspects of dentistry, the school has earned a reputation for outstanding clinical education.
LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry faculty, residents, and students take care of patients at clinics throughout the state, providing oral health treatment through an average of 100,000 patient visits a year. Outreach programs provide service and education for children and adults about oral health.
