LSU Health DPT Program’s Accreditation Reaffirmed

LSU Health New Orleans’ Doctor of Physical Therapy Program was recently re-accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) for a period of 10 years.  The program is accredited through June 30, 2029.

The accreditation process takes 12-18 months. It involves a comprehensive self-study culminating in a document showing how the program meets accreditation standards. CAPTE then sends an evaluation team of peers to conduct an on-site visit to validate the information and provide supplemental information, including processes to foster continued self-improvement of the program. The site team report is submitted to CAPTE, which then determines accreditation status.

According to CAPTE, the decision for re-accreditation indicates that the program is meeting its mission as evidenced by graduates who are demonstrating competence, professionalism, a commitment to life-long learning, and responsiveness to changing health care needs.  The program also demonstrates success in recruiting and retaining faculty who are committed to education and scholarship and who embody the attributes they seek to instill in their graduates. Graduation from a CAPTE-accredited program is required for eligibility to sit for the licensing exam.

“Accreditation assures prospective students that a program is taught by qualified faculty and will fully prepare them to enter the profession and succeed as physical therapists,” said J. M. Cairo, PhD, dean of LSU Health New Orleans School of Allied Health Professions. “We are proud that our doctor of physical therapy program continues to earn maximum accreditation.”
