Bone Marrow Transplant Program Earns Accreditation

The Ochsner Medical Center Leukemia, Blood, and Marrow Transplantation Program, within the Ochsner Cancer Institute (OCI), has once again received the internationally-recognized accreditation by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. By meeting the FACT-JACIE* International Standards for Cellular Therapy Product Collection, Processing and Administration, Ochsner Medical Center has earned FACT Accreditation for adult allogeneic and autologous hematopoietic progenitor cell transplantation, peripheral blood cellular therapy product collection, and cellular therapy product processing with minimal manipulation.

FACT is an internationally-recognized accrediting body for hospitals and medical institutions offering stem cell transplantation, and ensures the accredited institution has met the most rigorous standards in every aspect of stem cell therapy.  This covers the entire spectrum of stem cell therapy, from clinical care to donor management, cell collection, processing, storage, transportation, administration and cell release.

FACT-JACIE Standards are defined by leading experts based on the latest knowledge of the field of cellular therapy transplantation. Ochsner Medical Center attained its accreditation through evaluation of submitted documentation and on-site inspection to determine its compliance with current FACT standards and the United States Food and Drug Administration’s current rules for Good Tissue Practice.

Receiving the comprehensive FACT accreditation to perform Allogenic, MUD, Haploidentical and Cord Blood Transplantation at Ochsner is a testament to the high quality, comprehensive multi-disciplinary care we provide our patients. It is also an acknowledgement of the hard work our team performs daily,” said Dr. Furhan Yunus, Chairman, Hematology/Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant.

The FACT accreditation is the latest in a string of national recognition for the Ochsner Cancer Institute. OCI again received a three year accreditation by The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and Ochsner’s Lieselotte Tansey Breast Center again was granted a three year full accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers.

Ochsner Cancer Services provides multidisciplinary care for adult and pediatric cancer patients. These patients benefit from a collaborative approach to cancer care by a highly skilled team of physicians, oncology nurses, social workers, researchers, and other healthcare professionals.
